Community Involvement
Giving Back 2012
Just like last year, my community involvement for the state pageant, I donated books and stuffed animals. This time, I decided to enlist help from my teacher and classmates! It was so amazing because my friends brought so many things! We ended up with 40 stuffed toys & 30 books! You can read our whole story on my blog!
Battered Women's Shelter 2011
Me at the Battered Women's Shelter on October 17 when my mom, my grandma & my aunt delivered all the gift bags!
For my state pageant, I donated stuffed toys & books that were given to local firefighters & other organizations to give to children in need. For my national pageant, I had at least four hours of community service to complete. I organized (with the help of my parents & church) "Project KIDS - Kids In Divine Service". October is Domestic Abuse Violence Awareness month (that's why I have the purple ribbon on my shirt!) so we worked with the local battered women's shelter to provide food, clothes & gift bags to the women & children who live there! I was really excited to help and to see how much everyone appreciated what we did! They even told us we gave the largest donation ever! That is pretty cool! After my presentation and picture taking was over, I had a chance to paint! It was soooo much fun! I hope to be able to do it again soon, because sharing with others makes me feel really good!
From Saturday, August 20 through Monday, October 24, 2011, my parents, helped me with my project to help the Battered Women's Shelter! Our church members & many people in our community & beyond, were very generous in giving monetary donations, as well as clothing, food & supplies to help! Each weekend, my mom & I would go shopping for the supplies we needed to put in the gift bags. We used recyclable bags so they could be used again! We also washed, dried, folded and sorted the clothes into groups (kids, babies, adults) so they would be organized when we took them to the thrift store (the thrift store donates the money, from the sale of the clothes & shoes we donated, to the shelter and the ladies and kids at the shelter can shop there free!). I even looked through all my books & told my mom it was ok to donate them as well!
On Saturday, October 14, we delivered the clothing & shoes to Here Today Gone Tomorrow (that's the thrift store)! The back of my dad's truck & the inside back seat were full of stuff! We delivered the gift bags to the shelter on Monday, October 17. We had to take my mom's car, my grandma's truck and my aunt's car to get everything there! Miss Summer, volunteer coordinator, and the other workers at the shelter were very nice and very appreciative of what we did! Here's a complete list of items we donated:
Just because our drive is over, doesn't mean the shelter doesn't need more help! Please feel free to contact Miss Summer at (225) 389-3001 or [email protected]. She will be happy to help you set up donations! Please tell her that Alaina sent you! You may also go to my other website, le Modèle Behavior or to the CAFVIC (Battered Women's Program) website to learn more & to find out how you can get involved! You can also visit the thrift store website, Here Today Gone Tomorrow!
